Vacatures

1. Gezocht: Eindredacteur Pythagoras

2. UMC Utrecht

There is a new exciting MRI project at the University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht and we are looking for a

PhD student

with a strong background in Mathematics/Scientific Computing/Physics.

Job description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is well-suited to revealing the presence and severity of diseases in patients. Dynamic imaging is increasingly used - preferably in 3D - in applications where motion/deformation fields are most important. Existing dynamic MRI techniques generally reconstruct these fields from rapid snapshot images. However, this does not work in larger 3D volumes because the data acquisition is too slow to capture the movement. The project 3D MRI Action Camera, on which you will be working, directly targets the transformation of the moving anatomy over time. Using this principle, the 3D transform can be directly reconstructed from minimal MRI data through mathematical analysis. Numerical tests indicate that obtaining 50 3D frames per second is possible. This enables the study of physiological processes such as heart dynamics at much higher temporal scale. Furthermore, this technique can provide the speed and volumetric coverage to track moving tumors for MRI-guided radiation therapy. Numerical proof-of-principle for a simple test case is now available. You will be responsible for applying the new technique in realistic in vivo and more sophisticated scenarios. This challenging task will include designing better data acquisition strategies, robust (nonlinear) reconstruction algorithms and experimental implementation on clinical MRI scanners. The synergy between Mathematics and MRI Physics will be fundamental.

Requirements
You have a master?s degree in Mathematics, Physics or Electrical Engineering. You are also strongly motivated to acquire deep knowledge of MRI physics and hardware. A strong affinity with mathematical modeling and numerical methods is also required.

Conditions of employment

For this 100% post, the salary will start at

? 2.244,- the maximum salary will be ? 2.874,- corresponding with the salary scale for PhD candidates (OIO). This will be a temporary appointment for 4 years.

Department
You will be working at the internationally renowned Center for Image Sciences at the UMC Utrecht. In this project, you will collaborate with a team of image scientists (image processing and analysis), mathematicians and radiologists.

Relevant keywords for this position are Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI, Mathematics, Physics, Scientific Computing.

3. TUE

Eindhoven University of Technology is aiming to appoint a

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Analysis and Probability

in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The candidate will be jointly appointed in two groups: in CASA, the Center for Analysis, Scientific Computing, and Applications, and in STO, the Stochastics section. This is a new position, created specifically to bring together the communities of STO and CASA. The new appointee will be able to appoint a new PhD student, to work on a topic of her or his choice.

Because of the joint nature of the new position, candidates are invited who can bridge the gap between stochastics and analysis. Example research directions are interacting particle systems and their limits, stochastic homogenization, large deviations, stochastic-process limits for high-dimensional Markov processes, random graphs and stochastic approximation techniques.

More information can be found
here
or by contacting
Mark Peletier or Johan van Leeuwaarden.

The vacancy closes April 1st, 2017.
