CWI Lectures in honour of Adriaan van Wijngaarden
Date/location: November 3rd, 2016, Amsterdam Science Park Congress Centre
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Adriaan van Wijngaarden (1916-1987),
founder of computer science in the Netherlands and former director of CWI. 2016 is also
the 70th founding anniversary of CWI. We will celebrate these occasions with a special
programme in honour of Adriaan van Wijngaarden and his legacy. Several internationally
renowned speakers will explore the legacy of Van Wijngaarden in both mathematics and computer science.
The symposium aims at a general academic public and is organized by Paul Klint and Jan Rutten.
More information about the programme, registration, and key?note speakers will follow on a later date.

has an open position for a


PhD researcher


in the research group Digital Mathematics (DIMA)

under the supervision of Prof.Dr. Kurt Barb?.

Subject of the research: Mathematical modeling of nonlinear dynamical systems
with an underlying fractional order linear system for Biomedical



Prospective candidates are expected to hold a

master degree in mathematics, physics,

computer science or engineering. The PhD research is conducted in the faculty of
exact sciences with

the aim of obtaining a PhD degree in mathematics. One may apply through email

Prospective start date: 1 October 2016


Prospective project

The research is situated in the interplay between numerical mathematics and statistics in
particular time series analysis. The candidate is expected to study estimation techniques
for a class of Volterra nonlinear dynamical systems of the Wiener-Hammerstein type where
the underlying linear system is a system of fractional order differential equations.
Estimators are designed to estimate the coefficients of the nonlinear differential equations.
The techniques are validated on data sets coming from biomedical applications where its dynamics
exhibit strong diffusion phenomena. No experience in the topic is required.


Type of contract: A term of 1+1+2 years is offered to complete the PhD degree where an automatic
continuation up to 4 years is foreseen through annual (in the first two years) progress assessments.

The position is funded in part by a service contract from industry.


Teaching load: A limited weekly teaching load of approximately 2 hours of exercising sessions may be
requested. Therefore candidates fluent in Dutch have an advantage although this is not a requirement.


Deadline: There is no strict deadline. The position remains vacant until a proper candidate has been selected.
