Wintersymposium KWG: Analytische meetkunde

Bonn, Germany

4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum
Dates: September 18-23, 2016
The application process for the 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum starts
November 1, 2015.
Young computer scientists and mathematicians from all over the world can apply for one of the 200 coveted spots to participate in Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), an annual networking event. The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the great opportunity to personally interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. For one week, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany. The application period for the 4th HLF runs from
November 1, 2015 until February 3, 2016. Young researchers at all phases of their careers (undergrad, PhD or postdoc) are encouraged to complete and submit their application by February 3 (midnight at the dateline) via the following link:
http://application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

We would like to ask you to forward this information to everyone who might be interested at your institution (undergraduates; PhD Graduates; Post-Docs).

The 4th HLF will take place from September 18 to 23, 2016. This prominent, versatile event combines scientific, social and outreach activities in an informal atmosphere, fueled by comprehensive exchange and scientific inspiration. Laureate lectures, young researcher workshops and a structure welcoming unfettered discussions are the elements that compose the Forum?s platform. The 3rd HLF attracted young researchers from over 50 nations to participate.

Over the course of the week-long HLF, young researchers will be given the exclusive possibility to profoundly connect with their scientific role models and find out how they made it to the top of their fields. Explained through the eyes of one young researcher of the 3rd HLF who was inspired by,

?? how approachable the laureates were, how well organized HLF was, how amazing my peers from across the world were to talk to, and how insightful and full of perspectives the lectures were for young scientists?.

All completed and submitted applications are meticulously reviewed by an international committee of expert mathematicians and computer scientists to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are invited. There are 100 spaces available for each discipline of mathematics and computer science. All applicants will be notified whether or not they will be invited by the beginning of April, 2016 at the latest.

Background
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) annually organizes the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which is a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from all over the world. The 4th Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from
September 18 to 23, 2016. The HLF was initiated by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS). The Forum is organized by the HLFF in cooperation with KTS and HITS as well as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA).

3. Vacature

Korteweg-de Vries Instituut
The Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde (KdV Institute) is the mathematical research institute of the
Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The KdV Institute offers a stimulating scientific environment in which research focuses mainly within the research programmes:

  1. Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics;
  2. Pure, Applied and Numerical Analysis, and
  3. Stochastics.

It also provides the lecturers and instructors for the mathematics teaching within the Science faculty. The KdV Institute participates in the NWO research clusters GQT, STAR, NDNS+ and DIAMANT and in the Gravity programme NETWORKS. There is formal (and informal) cooperation with the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the VU University, and with Eurandom in Eindhoven. KdVI counts about 30 staff members and 40 postdoctoral researchers and PhD candidates.

Job description
The KdVI is looking for an assistant professor (tenure track) in Applied Probability. The candidate will perform research in the area of applied probability, both from a practical or a purely theoretical perspective. Possible topics are stochastic processes, queueing theory, inverse problems in stochastic networks, large deviations, fluctuation theory, performance analysis, extreme value theory, and advanced simulation methods, but his/her future research is by no means limited to these. We strive for appointing an excellent candidate, whose own research profile and interests will certainly be considered as an opportunity to open new directions of research. Collaboration with other researchers in The Netherlands or abroad is strongly encouraged.

Besides research, the candidate will have teaching duties both at the bachelor and master level, and will supervise master and/or PhD students.
