Department of Applied Mathematics

University of Twente

Two tenure track positions in Scientific Computing

The University of Twente (UT) is seeking researchers with an outstanding record in Mathematics and its applications in Science and Engineering for two tenure track positions in Scientific Computing within the Department of Applied Mathematics.

Job description

We are looking for two highly talented research scientists whose focus is on the development, analysis and application of computational tools, such as finite elements and multiscale methods, for models described by ordinary and partial differential equations. The successful candidate is expected to have strong affinity with mathematical modeling and numerical mathematics. In addition, the capability to develop collaboration between mathematics and the multi-disciplinary research context at the University of Twente is crucial. Particular focus is with forging connections with the MESA+ institute for Nanotechnology and with the MIRA institute for biomedical technology and technical medicine. The candidate will actively participate in the research within the Department of Applied Mathematics and develop a profile by collaborating with colleagues at MESA+ and MIRA.

It is important that a characteristic own research line within Scientific Computing is built for which external funding, such as within the NWO Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI/VIDI/VICI) and within the European Research Council are acquired.

Requirements

We expect a strong track record of innovative research and publications in leading international journals, and the ambition and potential to acquire research grants. The candidate should be an independently working researcher with excellent communication skills. Training in Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Physics or equivalent is essential, with a strong focus on mathematical modeling and numerical analysis based on systems of ordinary and partial differential equations. The candidates will be involved in the teaching program of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Bachelor and Master level, and are expected to transfer their specific expertise to the master program. The candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO).

Applications

Applications (including curriculum vitae, list of publications, research statement, and three names of potential references) can be submitted online to the University of Twente, attn. Prof.dr. P.M.G. Apers, Dean of the Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

For more information please contact Prof.dr.ir. J.J.W. van der Vegt (phone +31 534895628, email or Prof.dr.ir. B.J. Geurts (phone +31 534894125, email.

PhD positions in algebraic geometry

At the Mainz branch of the DFG-funded collaborative Research Center SFB/TRR 45 ?Periods, Moduli Spaces, and the Arithmetic of Algebraic Varieties? a number of post-doc positions will be available in the near future. We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong background in algebraic geometry or an adjacent field. Good communication skills in English or German are desirable as well as a willingness to learn German within the first two years. Teaching duties are minimal with at most 2 contact hours per week.

Candidates are expected to conduct research in one of the focus areas of the SFB/TRR 45 which are represented in Mainz. For further information please refer to the webpage www.sfb45.de or contact one of the investigators in Mainz directly: Manuel Blickle, Manfred Lehn, Stefan M?ller-Stach, Ariyan Javanpeykar, Duco van Straten, Kang Zuo.

The SFB/TRR45 is a DFG-funded research collective between the Universities Bonn, Essen and Mainz. The main focus is the education and training of young researchers (PhDs and post-docs) in the fields of algebraic and arithmetic geometry. There are numerous activities such as master classes, summer schools, seminars, conferences and doctoral student meetings, and members have other benefits, such as access to travel funds. It provides an ideal environment to further an academic career in algebraic or arithmetic geometry.

The positions are for 3 years (Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L 75%) with a 6 month qualification period. Applications should include the following documents:

?  Short Letter of intent

?  Curriculum Vitae

?  Copy of Highschool certificate and University degree

?  Two letters of recommendation, one of which from your Master thesis advisor (mailed directly to us)

?  Copy of Master thesis

Starting date of the positions is April 1st 2016 or later. For full consideration applications should arrive by December 10th 2016 as a single Pdf-file (publications/Master-thesis separately), to be mailed electroni?cally to the address. ????????????????? ????????.

The Johannes Gutenberg-Universit?t Mainz (JGU) is committed to increase the number of women in science and therefore encourages female scientists to apply. Handicapped persons with equal qualifications will be preferred.

Mathematical Institute

University of Oxford

We invite applications for a

Postdoctoral research position

funded by EPSRC, to work with Dr Jonathan Pila. This is a fixed-term position up to 36 months.  The post is available from 1 February 2015 until 31 January 2019 up to a maximum of 36 months (assuming a 1 February 2015 start).

The project is in collaboration with a grant held by Dr Gareth Jones at the University of Manchester. Its objectives are to prove new results in functional transcendence related to the uniformising maps of mixed Shimura varieties, using tools from model theory, and to apply these results in conjunction with other techniques from arithmetic and Diophantine geometry to certain finiteness questions in diophantine  geometry related to the Zilber-Pink conjecture, and to questions in model theory.

The successful candidate will work on research projects related to the grant.  There is also a requirement to teach up to four sets of undergraduate or graduate classes per year, determined by the demand for classes in specific areas.

Applicants should have a PhD in mathematics awarded or submitted (at the time of taking up the position), a strong record of research and publications, judged in accordance with career stage, and expertise in relevant parts of arithmetic and diophantine geometry.

Please direct informal enquiries to the Administrative Assistant, quoting vacancy reference 120661.

Applicants should read the job description before writing their application. You will be required to upload a letter setting out how you meet the selection criteria, a curriculum vitae including full list of publications, a statement of research interests and the contact details of two referees as part of your online application.  (NOTE: Applicants are responsible for contacting their referees and making sure that their letters are received by the closing date).
