Call for submissions for the KWG PhD prize

Every year, the Dutch Royal Mathematical Society (KWG) invites several PhD candidates to present their research at the Dutch Mathematical Congress (NMC). A jury of mathematicians from various fields chooses a winner who receives, besides the prestige attached to winning, a floating trophy and a monetary reward of 1000 euro. Former winners can be found here. This year the jury will be chaired by Prof. Frank Redig.

The PhD prize competition is open to PhD candidates in mathematics from all universities in the Netherlands, provided they have yet to defend their thesis on December 31st 2020. Due to the coronavirus, this year’s NMC is organised as a series of online events. The PhD prize competition is scheduled for Thursday, May 20th 2021. The deadline for proposals is Sunday, February 28th 2021.

In order to enter the competition please

  1. 1. send an extended abstract (one page approximately, maximum of two pages) and short CV (maximum one page) to the following email address: s.g.cox@uva.nl (use “KWG PhD prize” for the topic);
  2. 2. ask your daily supervisor to send a concise letter of recommendation to the same address (s.g.cox@uva.nl).

The deadline for proposals is Sunday, February 28th 2021.

The jury will review the submissions and make a short-list of four to six candidates who will be invited to give a presentation of 15 minutes (+5 minutes for questions) at the NMC. From these invited candidates the jury will then select the prize winner. The chief criterion for getting invited is the quality of the PhD research, the chief criterion for winning the prize is the capability to pre- sent the research to a broad mathematical audience. A PhD candidate should be well-advanced in his research (third/forth year) to have a good chance of being invited.
