Clay Mathematics Institute (ETH-Zurich) Summer school on 'Evolution Equations' Date/location: June 23-July 18, 2008; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH-Zurich, Switzerland. Deadline for applications: February 15, 2008. Summer School Program Description: Designed for graduate students and postdocs, the program will focus on recent progress in the theory of evolution equations. Such equations lie at the heart of many areas of mathematical physics, arising not only in situations with a manifest time evolution (such as linear and nonlinear wave and Schroedinger equations) but also in the high energy or semi-classical limits of elliptic problems. Mathematical problems as diverse as: - stability and singularity formation in relativity - mathematical theory of black holes - existence and blow-up of solutions to nonlinear Schroedinger equations - semi-classical asymptotics of quantum-mechanical energy states - quantum many body scattering theory All turn out to be susceptible to analysis by a remarkably unified set of techniques. The first three weeks of the school will consist of three parallel courses introducing these techniques together with some applications. The fourth week will consist of mini-courses focusing on more advanced topics. Foundational Courses: Microlocal Analysis, Spectral and Scattering Theory (Jared Wunsch, Rafe Mazzeo) The Theory of the Nonlinear Schroedinger equation (Gigliola Staffilani, Pierre Raphael) Wave Equation and Evolution Problems in General Relativity (Igor Rodnianski, Mihalis Dafermos) Mini-Course lecturers include Benjamin Schlein, Michael Struwe, Andras Vasy, Monica Visan, and others. Funding is available to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are within five years of receipt of their Ph.D. Standard support amounts will include funds for local expenses and accommodation plus economy travel. A Postdoc position for 2 years: http://vacatures.tue.nl/web/Vacature.aspx?VacatureNummer=V32.006 3. A position of Technical Assistant Interactive Mathematics Software for 1 year plus possibly 7 months: http://vacatures.tue.nl/web/Vacature.aspx?VacatureNummer=V32.007 Our permanent staff consists of Arjeh Cohen (chair), Aart Blokhuis, Andries Brouwer, Hans Cuypers, Jan Draisma, Hans Sterk, and Henny Wilbrink. Our research interests include Lie theory and related geometries, algorithms in algebra, combinatorics and discrete structures, and tropical geometry. We are also actively involved in the development of interactive mathematical documents. UT Vacancies . Associate professor ICT security . Assistant professor ICT security The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands offers courses in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Telematics, and Business Information Technology. The Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) is a multi- disciplinary research institute of the University of Twente. CTIT coordinates the research activities in all the areas relevant to the development, the introduction and the usage of telematics and information technology systems. The Distributed and Embedded Security (DIES) Research Group of EEMCS/CTIT leads the largest multidisciplinary security research activity in The Netherlands. DIES has vacancies for an assistant and an associate professor ICT security. Distributed and embedded systems are resource constrained, dynamically evolving, unattended systems, which interact with a physical environment with the ultimate purpose of serving people (Smart Systems). Security is an important topic because the threats represent huge practical problems, whereas the solutions require sophisticated theory, advanced tools and extensive experimentation. Specific topics that DIES works on include: 1. To advance our theoretical and practical knowledge of secure systems. For example, our current understanding of secure systems is so limited that the best we can do today is to build systems and to subject them to experiments. 2. To take modelling secure systems and their environment from art to science. For example, it is relatively easy to make a different model for each different property of a system, or for a different purpose (analysis, optimisation, simulation). It is hard to keep those models consistent. 3. To develop methods and tools (such as model checkers) supporting a holistic view of system security. For example, many properties are delicate: only one leak is sufficient to spoil the security of an entire system. 4. To develop new security protocols and algorithms to improve the security of systems under stringent conditions such as resource constraints, dynamics, and unattended operation. What we ask You have a PhD in a security related area and your background is in computer science, electrical engineering, or mathematics. You have a proven track record of supervising PhD students, acquiring external funding and publishing in high quality journals and conferences. Women In several areas women are still underrepresented. Therefore women are expressly invited to apply. Information and application Please send your curriculum vitae, publication list, letter of motivation, and names of three referees, before February 1st 2008 to Prof.dr. Pieter Hartel, email: pieter.hartel@utwente.nl, phone +31 53 489 2411, website: http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/vacatures_externe_werving/07-181.eng.doc/ CWI Within the Research Theme 'Earth and Life Sciences', we are looking for a postdoc for the duration of two years. The research for this position concerns the derivation of a control law that specifies when to raise the heights of major dike rings in The Netherlands and by how much. The optimal-control approach will be based on a model which includes time-dependent scenarios of future water levels in the North Sea and in the major rivers, and of the growth of the value-at-risk. Specific cases will be distinguished with respect to segmentation of dikes and to locations of the dike-ring areas in the country. A partial differential equation of the Bellmann-Hamilton-Jacobi type will play a key role in the control problem. Dynamic programming, impulse control, and numerical analysis of this equation will be essential research topics. CWI has a significant expertise in these areas. A challenge of the research is to fruitfully combine these different sources of knowledge. The project will be carried out in CWI's research group 'Scientific Computing and Control Theory', in cooperation with external partners. Further information about the project can be obtained from: prof. B. Koren Barry.Koren@cwi.nl +31.205924114 prof. C.W. Oosterlee C.W.Oosterlee@cwi.nl +31.205924108 prof. J.H. van Schuppen J.H.van.Schuppen@cwi.nl +31.205924085 Applicants are expected to have a background in control and system theory, numerical mathematics, or analysis. The salary and terms of employment are in accordance with the 'CAO-onderzoekinstellingen' and are based on qualifications. Moreover, CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexibility and initial help with housing for foreigners. Applications, mentioning 'Dikes Project', and with a curriculum vitae and a list of publications, can be sent either electronically or as hard copy to: CWI Personnel and Organization, Ms. Monique Scholtz, P.O. Box 94079, 1090 GB Amsterdam, The Netherlands, e-mail: pd@cwi.nl University of Goettingen The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) is presently funding a research project entitled "Harmonical Analysis on affine G-varieties" for the duration of five years at the Institute of Mathematics of the Georg-August-University Goettingen, Germany. The project started October 2006, its aim being the study of non-transitive group actions on algebraic varieties and manifolds, and the development of a corresponding representation and spectral theory. More informations can be found at: http://www.uni-math.gwdg.de/ramacher/Emmy-Noether.html . The project offers a post-doctoral position for the duration of 2 years or less. The position is paid according to the German general scheme for civil servants, and includes social benefits; the precise salary depends on age, marital status, and the number of children. Applicants interested in this position, and working in the fields of harmonic analysis, representation theory, operator and spectral theory, algebraic geometry, or automorphic forms, are asked to contact Pablo Ramacher at ramacher@uni-math.gwdg.de . University of Copenhagen The Department of Mathematical Sciences at University of Copenhagen is seeking top young researchers for several attractive postdoctoral positions starting approx. September 1, 2008. The positions are initially for one year, with the possibility of extension with two additional years. The teaching load is three quarter courses per year (one quarter = one-half semester), primarily related to the applicants' research. The after-tax salary for foreigners is approx. EUR 2700 per month plus pension and holiday supplements. While quality is the core evaluation criterion, we are actively seeking candidates who can interact with one of the existing research groups. See www.math.ku.dk/english for more about our research. Interested candidates should send a CV and a short research description to jobs@math.ku.dk, and arrange to have at least two letters of recommendation sent to the same email address, or by snailmail to Hiring Committee, c/o Lillian Stegger, Dept. of Math Sciences, Univ of Copenhagen, Universitetsparken 5, DK-2100 Copenhagen, DENMARK. Review of applications will begin January 2, 2008. Reykjavik University Vacancies Postdoc positions in Combinatorics The Combinatorics Group at Reykjavik University announces two postdoc positions starting in the Fall of 2008 (or later). The positions will be for two years each, with a possible one year extension, depending on funding. Applications, including a CV, should be sent by email to einarst@ru.is. Also, letters of recommendation should be sent to the same address. We are looking for candidates with research interests in Enumerative and Algebraic Combinatorics who will benefit from working with us and who will contribute to the group's work. In the last few years we have been working mostly on permutation patterns and permutation statistics, and their relations to other combinatorics, but we welcome applicants with a more algebraic bent, since we are in the process of strengthening that aspect of our research. The Combinatorics Group's web site is http://www.math.ru.is/combinatorics .
