Five consecutive leader of SEN2 started research groups at Dutch universities. Now that concurrency theory is so well established in The Netherlands, CWI has decided to shift the focus of SEN2 to service-oriented computing. This workshop celebrates the achievements of 25 years of concurrency theory, and looks ahead to the next 25 years. This year's PhD summer school of the Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC) will be devoted to 'systems biology', in particular the fascinating topic of the functioning of 'the living cell'. The pressing question is what systems and control theory can contribute to this challenging area of scientific research, and, conversely, how mathematical theory may be enriched. Although traditionally systems and control has been mostly linked to electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering, there are historical links to biology ('feedback' is an important concept in biology as well), and the terminology 'systems biology' is emphasizing 'systems' not without reason. The program of the summer school is set up in such a manner that the biological and biochemical background will be treated in a careful tutorial manner, thus preparing the stage for identifying and discussing the problems where systems and control theory does and may contribute. The summer school is organized in collaboration with the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation. Lectures: The tutorial lectures of the summer school will be given by: - Jan-Hendrik Hofmeyr (Dept. of Biochemistry, Univ. of Stellenbosch, South Africa) - Joerg Stelling (Institute of Computational Science, ETH Zuerich, Switzerland) - Olaf Wolkenhauer (Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Univ. of Rostock, Germany). Special topics lecturers: - Hidde de Jong (INRIA Rhone-Alpes, France) - Sef Heijnen (Bio Process Technology, Technical Univ. of Delft, Netherlands) - Bert Poolman (Centre for Synthetic Biology, Univ. of Groningen, Netherlands) - Bart de Moor (ESAT, KU Leuven, Belgium) - Eric Bullinger (Univ. of Strathclyde, United Kingdom) - Bas Teusink (NIZO Food Research, Netherlands) For further information, including the schedule of the lectures and registration form (Deadline May 16), see http://www.disc.tudelft.nl/activities/cells-and-systems.html or contact the organizer: Arjan van der Schaft, Institute of Mathematics and Computing Science, Univ. of Groningen, e-mail: a.j.van.der.schaft@math.rug.nl ************************************************************************* 3.
