Call for Registration and Abstracts voor 5ECM Geacht KWG-lid, Van 14-18 juli 2008 wordt -- onder auspicien van de European Mathematical Society en onder speciaal patronaat van het KWG -- in de RAI in Amsterdam het Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (5ECM) gehouden. Dit grote Europese wiskunde congres wordt eenmaal in de vier jaar georganiseerd. De vier voorgaande congressen vonden plaats in Parijs, Budapest, Barcelona en Stockholm. In dit congres wordt het Nederlands Mathematisch Congres van 2008 ondergebracht, met o.a. de Brouwerlezing, de Beegerlezing en de jaarvergadering van het KWG. De organisatie is in handen van het CWI, de Afdeling Wiskunde van de Faculteit Exacte Wetenschappen van de VU en het Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde van de UvA. The ever-growing dependency of modern society on computers and digital communication requires a continuous validation of the main cryptosystems used for the safeguarding of these systems. RSA, the archetype public-key cryptosystem, depends on the difficulty of factoring large numbers. The aim of this four-year research project is to help push the current world factoring record from 665 bits (200 decimal digits) to 768 bits (232 decimal digits), a commonly used key size in RSA. A realization of this aim will set a new standard for what is the current unsafe/safe choice of the key size in RSA. To reach this goal, an arsenal of the best known algorithmic and software optimization techniques will be combined with the fastest available hardware.
