KU Leuven Symposium on "The birth of numerical analysis" Date/location: October 29-30, 2007; Leuven (Belgium) Numerical analysis has known an enormous evolution since the introduction of digital computers in the years 1950-1960. This symposium wants to bring together lecturers who were at the origin of this evolution to testify about their experiences, and attendants who are the current users of numerical analysis or who are just interested in the roots of this discipline. The following lecturers accepted our invitation: Gerard Alberts, Kendall Atkinson, Claude Brezinski, Jack Dongarra, Brian Ford, Rolf Jeltsch, Herbert Keller, James Lyness, Robert J. Plemmons, Mike Powell, Gerhard Wanner, Alistair Watson. For more information, abstracts and registration, see http://www.cs.kuleuven.be/~ade/WWW/WOG/history/ This symposium is an activity of the Scientific Research Network 'Advanced Numerical Methods for Mathematical Modelling'. It receives additional funding from 'Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Vlaanderen FWO' and 'Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique FNRS'. EIDMA A day about the Delsarte bound a scientific fest in honor of Philippe Delsarte, emeritus Date/location: Monday October 29, 2007; UCL, Place de l'Universite, 1 Senat Academique, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium Route: http://www.uclouvain.be/en-acces-lln.html A question: let us imagine a lot of balls with the same radius. What is the best configuration of such balls when you want to pack it at best? The discussion began with Newton, Gregory, Kepler, and many other ones. The question seems naive but it is strongly related to information theory (Shannon), combinatorics, quantum communication, error-correcting codes, energy, puzzles, ... It is the so-called kissing problem (for balls). Philippe Delsarte gave us close bounds on the number of balls using linear programming ... Our invitation to an exclusive day with many living experts in the world. Sponsored and organized by the following UCL partners: - INGI department (Computer Science department) - Graduate school in Systems, Optimization, Control and Networks (SOCN) - Graduate school on MUltimedia, SIlicon, Communications, Security Electrical and Electronics Engineering (MUSICS) - PAI DYSCO (INMA) - PAI BCRYPT (TELE) - UCL Crypto Group With talks by: Christine Bachoc (Bordeaux): Generalizations of P. Delsarte linear programming bound in the framework of group representation Robert Calderbank (Princeton), Henry Cohn (Microsoft Research), Michel Goemans (MIT), Abhinav Kumar (Harvard): Linear programming bounds for potential energy and universally optimal configurations Alex Samorodnitsky (Hebrew Univ. of Jerusalem): What makes the linear programming bounds for codes so good? Alexander Schrijver (CWI): Delsarte Triple and Semidefinite More information: - Jean-Jacques Quisquater, jjq@uclouvain.be - Olivier Pereira, olivier.pereira@uclouvain.be A reception will be organized after the talks. Registration is free but you need to send an email to sylvie.baudine@uclouvain.be ************************************************************************* 3.
