Sincerely yours, Diana Droog, Management Assistant Delft Centre for Computational Science and Engineering TUE/EURANDOM 1) Modelling and simulation of the CMS Tier0 input buffering process A.T.M. Aerts Date/time/location: 18 June 2007, LG 1.110 (QPA), 13.30-14.30 hrs The CMS experiment at CERN will produce large amounts of data in short time periods. Because the data buffers at the experiment are not large enough, this data needs to be transferred to other storages. The CMS Tier0 will be an enormous job processing and storage facility at the CERN site. One part of this Tier0, called the Tier0 input buffer, has the task to readout the experiment data buffers and to supply these data to other tasks that need to be carried out with it (such as storing). It has to make sure that no data is lost. The buffer will be implemented with commodity disk servers and the question is how many servers minimally are needed? In this talk we describe the modelling and simulation of the buffering process to compare different scenarios for a set of disk servers that can accomplish the Tier0 input buffer tasks. To increase the performance per disk server, write and read actions on the same disk server are separated. To find the optimal moments for a disk server to change from accepting and writing items to supplying items to other tasks, the combination of various parameters, such as the usage of a particular queuing discipline (like FIFO, LIFO, LPTF and SPTF) and the state of the disk server has been studied. The simulations have been performed with the Yasper simulation tool. This tool uses Petri Net models as its input. The purpose of the seminar is to generate and discuss ideas with the audience. The division contributes to various international projects in the area of assimilation of satellite observations of the atmospheric composition. The EU project GEMS is developing an assimilation system for the analysis of greenhouse gases, aerosols and reactive gases (http://www.ecmwf.int/research/ EU_projects/GEMS/). This development is based on the global weather forecast model of the European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and several existing atmospheric chemistry models including the TM5 model. Specific tasks of the KNMI within GEMS are: (1) The coupling of the ECMWF system and the TM5 chemistry-transport model; (2) The assimilation of satellite observations of the reactive gases ozone, CO, NO2, CH2O and SO2, with a focus on the troposphere. Specific project information For this challenging project we are looking for a candidate with a good knowledge of data assimilation and experience with complex numerical models, in particular atmospheric chemistry, weather or climate models. The candidate will work on the implementation of the TM5 chemistry-transport model, chemical data assimilation within the GEMS system and the evaluation of the modelling and chemical assimilation results. The candidate will also assist in the validation of the GEMS system based on independent measurements. Required * Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, physics or mathematics; * Knowledge of data assimilation or inverse modelling techniques; * Experience in numerical modelling; * Good communicative skills, ability to function as part of an international team of researchers; The appointment is guaranteed until the end of the GEMS project, March 2009. Depending on the availability of funding the appointment will be extended to a maximum of five years.
