Ridgway Scott (Louis Block Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and of Mathematics, Univ. of Chicago) Abstract: This talk will focus on issues related to modeling dispersive fluid flow. We illustrate the concept of dispersion via one-dimensional models for surface waves that are now classic, and use this to motivate a model that has been proposed in different contexts for three-dimensionalflow. This model of dispersion augments the Navier-Stokes model, and is known in different contexts as the grade-two model of Rivlin and Ericksen and the Lagrangian Averaged Navier-Stokes (alpha) model. We intend to (0) explain the various contexts in which this dispersive model has arisen; (1) survey briefly what is (and is not) known theoretically about this model, and mention the status of numerical stability results for the two-dimensional case; (2) present a heuristic analysis of the effect of the dispersive term via lubrication approximations, and (3) discuss recent proposals for modifying the model to include more complex rheological behavior, including shear-dependent viscosity; (4) suggest that this provides yet another way in which FEniCS can help to facilitate computational modeling. Vacature RWTH Aachen Scientific researcher (PhD or PostDoc) At the IGPM Institut fuer Geometrie und Praktische Mathematik (IGPM) of the RWTH Aachen. This position gives the opportunity to work in a highly motivated interdisciplinary team on a topic on the cutting-edge of applied mathematics and scientific computing. Project summary: the project concerns the development and implementation of numerical methods for the simulation of two-phase incompressible flows. The candidate becomes a member of a team that is working on the development of a solver (DROPS, cf. http://www.igpm.rwth-aachen.de/DROPS) which is used for the numerical simulation of two-phase flows. The candidate should have a strong background in the numerical analysis of partial differential equations. We can offer a full PhD/PostDoc position which can be filled immediately. The salary is according to E13. Employment equity is one of our goals. We also welcome applications from persons with disabilities. For further details, see http://www.igpm.rwth-aachen.de/drupal/?q=node/6 or contact Prof.dr. Arnold Reusken, email: reusken@igpm.rwth-aachen.de, tel: 0241/80 97972. Applications should be sent to Prof.dr. Arnold Reusken, Institut fuer Geometrie und Praktische Mathematik, Templergraben 55, D-52056 Aachen, Germany. ************************************************************************* (einde mededelingen)
