Vacatures UL Postdoc positions `Arithmetic and Algebraic Geometry' Two Postdoc positions are available at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Leiden, in the areas of Arithmetic and Algebraic Geometry, in a broad sense. Depending on the candidate, the position will be for one year (with the possibility of an extension by another year) or for two years. The preferred starting date is September 1, 2006. For more information, see: http://www.math.leidenuniv.nl/nieuw/nl/vacatures/ RUG (2 Vacatures) 1) PhD Research position for the project Stability, Bifurcations and Stabilisation of Invariant Sets in Differential Inclusions Discontinuities are present in a wide variety of systems; e.g. friction in mechanical systems, diodes in electrical circuits or switching control systems. Models of such systems are commonly formulated as differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides. Such systems can be formulated as differential inclusions with a set-valued right-hand side when no state-jumps occur; these systems are commonly called Filippov systems. Equilibria, periodic and quasi-periodic solutions of differential inclusions represent important classes of limit solutions for such systems. The equilibria may range from one or multiple isolated equilibrium points, either on or outside the discontinuity surfaces, to equilibrium sets located on the discontinuity surface(s). Likewise, the (quasi-) periodic solutions can either lie entirely in the smooth domain of the state-state space or hit (or partially slide along) the discontinuity surface. The stability properties of these limit solutions largely influence the global dynamics of the system. Therefore, the first goal of the project is the development of a stability theory for such limit solutions. For further information: http://www.math.rug.nl/~broer or http://www.ndns.nl or contact Prof.dr. H.W. Broer (Dynamical System) This is a double project with a counterpart at Eindhoven University with another PhD research project under Prof. Henk Nijmeijer, see: http://w3.wtb.tue.nl/nl/people_pages/?&script=showemp.php&no_cache=1&pid=953 2) Dept. of Mathematics: Tenure-track position for assistant professor in Dynamical Systems Tenure-track position for assistant professor in Applied Analysis The vacant positions are in the research units Dynamical Systems and Applied Analysis, which participate in the NWO-cluster `Nonlinear Dynamics of Natural Systems'. The research program NONLINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS focusses on the analysis of qualitative aspects of deterministic systems in finite degrees of freedom. The fundamental part concerns questions of (structural) stability and bifurcations, where (quasi-) periodicity and routes to chaos are of special interest. A more applied part of the program studies concrete systems from meteorology, biology, etc. The research program APPLIED ANALYSIS is devoted to the analysis of complex and heterogeneous systems. Mathematical research is carried out in a wide range of subjects in Analysis and Systems theory, motivated by applications in various areas, including physical systems, networked systems and systems biology. Applications should be sent before May 15th 2006 to: Personnel Department, University of Groningen, P.O.Box 72, 9700 AB Groningen, The Netherlands. For further information see http://www.ndns.nl/open-positions, or contact Prof.dr. H.W. Broer (Dynamical Systems), broer@math.rug.nl or Prof.dr.
