KNMI, De Bilt Wiskunde door Weer en Wind Datum/tijd/lokatie: 21 april, 2006, 09.30-16.15 u., KNMI, De Bilt Het weer is een van de onderwerpen die dagelijks op de televisie worden genoemd. Het KNMI is spin in het web van weerdata en modellen en levert data aan vele afnemers. Maar het KNMI is nog meer. In het karakteristieke gebouw in De Bilt houden wetenschappers zich bezig met weer, klimaat en seismologie en het beheer, ontwikkeling en onderzoek aan het meetnet, de ICT en de datavoorziening. Daarnaast is er een uitgebreid internationaal netwerk, gericht op data-uitwisseling en gezamenlijk onderzoek. Het onderzoek bij het KNMI staat op verschillende manieren met wiskunde in verband, onder meer via differentiaalvergelijkingen, numerieke wiskunde, data-assimilatietechnieken en (extremen) statistiek. De sectie Industriele en Toegepaste Wiskunde (ITW) van het Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap organiseert een symposium met als thema `wiskunde door weer en wind'.
