UL Feestelijke onthulling van een bijzondere replica van het kwadrant van Snellius Datum/tijd/locatie: maandag 16 janauri 2006; aanvang 16 u., begane grond van het 'Snellius', Niels Bohrweg 1, Leiden Snellius (1580-1626) is naast de naar hem genoemde wet over breking van het licht ook bekend om zijn werk op het gebied van de landmeetkunde. Hij bepaalde met een zogenaamd kwadrant afstanden tussen steden en dorpen. Een origineel kwadrant van Snellius staat in het Boerhaave Museum in Leiden. Bij zijn afscheidsrede is aan Gerrit van Dijk als kado een replica van het kwadrant van Snellius aangeboden. Deze replica is met veel enthousiasme en groot vakmanschap vervaardigd door de Fijn Mechanische Dienst van het Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) in samenwerking met de afdeling Hout en Meubel van het Regionaal Opleidingen Centrum (ROC) Leiden. U wordt hierbij uitgenodigd voor de feestelijke onthulling van het kwadrant van Snellius op bovengenoemde datum, tijd en plaats. Bart M. ter Haar Romeny, PhD) is a research group in the Master's track Biomedical Imaging & Informatics in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The group conducts research, development and teaching of new methods for biomedical image analysis in an inspiring and international environment. A strong collaboration is established with Philips Medical Systems (prof. Frans A. Gerritsen, PMS, part time professor TUE) and the Maastricht University Hospital. This group is guided by prof. Brenny van Groesen, and conducts research and teaching activities in ordinary and partial differential equations, and in mathematical modelling of problems from physical and technical sciences. In the project `Wave Propagation and Reflection Seismology', that will be carried out by a PhD student, a postdoc, and dr. Chris Stolk (http://www.math.utwente.nl/~stolkcc), there is currently a vacancy for a PhD student. The PhD student is to work on new methods for inverting data from reflection seismology. This is a technique to produce 3-D images of the subsurface of the earth, used to discover likely locations of oil and gas deposits, as well as for global geophysical studies. Van de kandidaat wordt verwacht dat hij/zij onderzoek verricht in het domein van numerieke methoden en technisch-wetenschappelijke software, bij voorkeur in numerieke lineaire algebra, multischaal- en multiresolutie- technieken of (quasi-) Monte Carlo-methoden, aansluitend bij de onderzoeks- thema's van de afdeling Numerieke Analyse en Toegepaste Wiskunde. Er wordt verwacht dat hij/zij op nationaal en internationaal vlak onderzoeks- projecten aantrekt en begeleidt. De kandidaat moet kunnen aantonen dat hij/zij over een ruime nationale en internationale ervaring in het onder- zoeksgebied beschikt, en dat hij/zij de nodige didactische ervaring heeft in dit domein. De kandidaat zal onderwijsopdrachten opnemen in het domein van wiskundige analyse en numerieke methoden, in de programma's master wiskundige ingenieurstechnieken, bachelor ingenieurswetenschappen en/of bachelor informatica.
