Bart M. ter Haar Romeny, PhD) is a research group in the Master's track Biomedical Imaging & Informatics in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The group conducts research, development and teaching of new methods for biomedical image analysis in an inspiring and international environment. This group is guided by prof. Brenny van Groesen, and conducts research and teaching activities in ordinary and partial differential equations, and in mathematical modelling of problems from physical and technical sciences. In the project `Wave Propagation and Reflection Seismology', that will be carried out by a PhD student, a postdoc, and dr. Chris Stolk (http://www.math.utwente.nl/~stolkcc), there is currently a vacancy for a PhD student. The PhD student is to work on new methods for inverting data from reflection seismology. This is a technique to produce 3-D images of the subsurface of the earth, used to discover likely locations of oil and gas deposits, as well as for global geophysical studies. Van de kandidaat wordt verwacht dat hij/zij onderzoek verricht in het domein van numerieke methoden en technisch-wetenschappelijke software, bij voorkeur in numerieke lineaire algebra, multischaal- en multiresolutie- technieken of (quasi-) Monte Carlo-methoden, aansluitend bij de onderzoeks- thema's van de afdeling Numerieke Analyse en Toegepaste Wiskunde. Er wordt verwacht dat hij/zij op nationaal en internationaal vlak onderzoeks- projecten aantrekt en begeleidt. De kandidaat moet kunnen aantonen dat hij/zij over een ruime nationale en internationale ervaring in het onder- zoeksgebied beschikt, en dat hij/zij de nodige didactische ervaring heeft in dit domein.
